TV Addiction

After my realization I did a little bit of research on TV addiction. Even though it is not a diagnosable condition of DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV) it is recognized as a real problem. It is a form of behavioral addiction, in which an individual repeatedly engages in an action until said action causes serious negative consequences to the person's physical, mental, social, and/or financial well being.

There have not been any serious negative consequences for me, but I know this cannot continue this way. I have a very active boyfriend, who does a lot of sport. He does not like the fact that I spend so much time watching TV. And he is right: I could be using my time for other things.

While researching I found a couple of interesting articles and sites on TV addiction and how to overcome it.

Hello all, my name is Tina and I am a TV addict...

I have been a TV addict since my early teens. But recently it has become clear to me that I have to do something about it. While writing my dissertation for my Masters Degree I noticed how much time I spent procrastinating and how much of that time was spent watching series or looking for new things to watch when I already had watched all new episodes available. I handed in my dissertation last Friday (Yay! I'm done!) two weeks after the date that I originally had planed to submit... It was still on time, but I could have done it much faster and better.

So I decided to do something about it. Make more time to do all those things I wanted to do for so long. One of them is to write a blog. I had one years ago when I moved abroad to study. A blog to keep friends and family up to date. But it did not last very long... To start a new blog I knew I had to have a topic. A while ago a friend of mine started to write about fashion (Fashinably Late by Natalia Galbetti). I love her blog and what she has done with it. But I do not think I am qualified to write about fashion. Besides, there are a lot of bloggers out there doing that already. And most of them know what they are writing about.

Besides Nati, another thing that inspired me to write a blog again was the film Julie & Julia. I love cooking and thought the idea to have a project and acompany it with a blog was very good. In this way everyone knows when you give up, fall behind or break promises, even if you made them to yourself. Since I did not want to copy the idea of cooking I stil needed to find a project. When I realized how much time I spend watching TV I had my project.

I promised myself to not use this blog as a means to procrastinate. The only thing I did while still writing my dissertation was to find a name. The afternoon after handing in my dissertation I set this up and today I am writing my first post.

Whith this blog I hope to regain control over the time I spend watching TV, gain more experience with social media and analytic tools, try out new and exciting stuff, and get to do all those things I have been pushing to the future (like running).

Hopefully you'll enjoy my blog and acompany me in the journey of kicking my TV addiction. Over the next posts I will tell you a little bit more about me and what exactly I want to do with this blog.

Stay tuned for more! ;-)
